École acadienne de Truro

École acadienne de Truro is a publically funded French school in Nova Scotia. In Doucet-Boudreau v Nova Scotia (Minister of Education), 2003 SCC 62, the Supreme Court of Canada found a delay in building French language schools in Nova Scotia violated minority language education rights under section 23 of the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms (Charter). Further the Court found that the Nova Scotia government’s obligation to fund French schools and reporting duty were an “appropriate and just remedy” under section 24(1) of the Charter. This case is constitutionally significant because it held that the province has a constitutional duty to provide programs and facilities that will give linguistic minority children substantive education equality.
